Founder and Executive Director Barry Cooper
Barry Cooper, affectionately known as Coach Coop, is more than an educator—he is a bridge-builder, a protector, and a catalyst for change. With over a decade of dedicated work supporting young men of color, Barry’s life and mission are rooted in resilience, transformation, and hope.
In 2020, he founded The B.R.O. Experience Foundation—Brothers Redefining Opportunity—to expand his relentless pursuit of closing the Black male mental health gap. His journey from the streets of Bed-Stuy to leading initiatives that empower youth has been marked by a profound commitment to creating safe spaces where young men can be authentic, brave, and connected.
Barry’s career includes roles as Dean and Director of Culture at Eagle Academy for Young Men, adjunct instructor at CUNY Fatherhood Academy, and mentor for youth navigating incarceration. An accomplished author, his works include The Provider: A Guide for Co-Parenting Dads, with a foreword by Mayor Eric Adams, and a forthcoming children’s book. He has served as Vice-Chair of the Brooklyn NAACP Educational Committee and notably ran for local office to influence meaningful change.
His story is one of transformation—shaped by personal struggles, community resilience, and unwavering purpose. From battling systemic barriers to becoming a steadfast protector and leader, Barry’s life exemplifies what it means to persevere against the odds. His work with The B.R.O. Experience continues to inspire young men to discover their strength, voice, and potential—building tomorrow's leaders today.
Barry’s call is simple yet urgent: to rewrite narratives, ignite hope, and ensure every young man has a place to thrive and belong. Because real change begins with bold visions, courageous hearts, and a community united in support.
